Engagement Session or Hallmark Audition? You Decide.

There’s something magical about fall — that crisp air, that cozy smell of leaves and cinnamon, and, of course, the sudden urge to wear flannel and fall in love under every tree in sight. For Maddie and Colby, Dumbarton Oaks Gardens wasn’t just a pretty spot — it was the spot. It’s where Colby popped the big question, and now, a week later, they came back to re-create that moment — but with better lighting.

Dumbarton Oaks is a captivating treasure in Washington DC, ideal for engagement photography. With its breathtaking gardens, historic buildings, and peaceful environment, it’s no surprise that couples choose this special venue to mark their love. If you think Dumbarton Oaks is gorgeous in spring, wait until you see it in fall. The ivy turns dramatic shades of gold and rust, the cobblestones look like they were hand-painted by some overachieving artist, and every corner feels like the set of a rom-com where Meg Ryan could appear at any moment holding a pumpkin spice latte.

The Proposal Re-Creation ❤️

When we reached the spot, I asked Colby how it all went down the first time. He grinned and without hesitation, proceeded to re-create the moment without me instructing him and with ZERO nerves. He had ONE job and didn't fail to act it out. THIS. WAS. HIS. MOMENT. It was a classic hallmark moment (If Hallmark’s casting department is reading this, call me.) Maddie giggled, and followed his lead. This is a classic reminder that sometimes love stories aren’t just one big moment, but a collection of smaller, sillier, happier ones that keep repeating in new ways.

After his big moment, I asked Colby to guide Maddie down the steps towards the water where a wider shot was captured.

The Allure of Dumbarton Oaks

Dumbarton Oaks is more than just a beautiful estate; it is a place rich in history and charm. Built in the 18th century, this estate boasts magnificent gardens crafted by the talented landscape architect Beatrix Farrand.

The gardens offer several distinct areas, each providing a unique backdrop. From meticulously arranged formal gardens to lush woodland areas, photographers will find limitless opportunities for beautiful shots. The rich history and artistic flair of Dumbarton Oaks make it perfect for couples who appreciate beauty and elegance.

Thinking About Your Own Fall Session?

Here’s the secret sauce: Embrace the chill — rosy cheeks make great photos.🍂 Bring movement — twirl, toss leaves, dance it out. Pack a cozy drink or blanket — instant props and snuggle points. And maybe choose a spot that already means something to you. Because re-living your story is the best kind of magic.

Timing Matters: Choose the Right Time for Your Session

Timing is crucial when planning your engagement photography. The golden hour—shortly after sunrise or before sunset—offers the best natural light for your photos. At Dumbarton Oaks, the soft golden glow of the sun streaming through the trees creates a truly magical atmosphere.

Consider scheduling your session in either spring or fall when the gardens are in full bloom or dressed in vibrant autumn colors. Springtime may showcase a stunning 65% more flowers, while fall offers those warm, picturesque hues that create a romantic backdrop. These seasonal visuals will enhance your engagement photos beautifully. My personal favorite is OBV Fall because of its colors and cozy environment. The cold breeze also helps me cool off a bit when I get crazy behind the camera.

What to Wear for Your Engagement Session

Selecting the right outfits for your engagement shoot is essential for looking and feeling great. Here are some helpful tips:

  1. Coordinate, Don’t Match: Choose colors that complement each other rather than dressing in identical outfits. For example, a soft blue dress paired with a navy suit can create depth in your photos.

  2. Consider the Location: Dumbarton Oaks has an elegance that calls for sophisticated attire. Think flowing dresses for women and smart suits for men to truly elevate the overall aesthetic in your images.

  3. Accessorize Thoughtfully: Meaningful pieces can enhance your outfits. For instance, wearing a necklace gifted by your partner or carrying a prop like a picnic blanket can add a personal touch to the photographs.

  4. Comfort is Key: While looking good is important, comfort is paramount. Choose outfits that allow you to move freely, enabling you to enjoy the moment fully.

Capturing the Essence of Your Love Story

Couples photography is about creating a visual narrative the love you have for each other. At Dumbarton Oaks, there are countless ways to embody your relationship. Here are some ideas to enrich your session:

  1. Incorporate Personal Elements: Bring along items that represent your relationship, such as a favorite book or shared hobby. These meaningful pieces can infuse your photos with sentiment.

  2. Candid Moments: Capture the genuine moments that reflect your relationship's essence. Encourage each other to interact naturally, share laughs, and relax. These spontaneous displays of affection often result in the most heartfelt photos.

  3. Explore Different Areas: Take advantage of Dumbarton Oaks’ varied settings. Each section—from formal gardens to tranquil paths—offers unique opportunities for creative shots. Explore together to find those perfect spots.

After the Session: What to Do with Your Photos

Once your engagement session at Dumbarton Oaks wraps up, you’ll have a collection of amazing images. Here are several ideas for showcasing those photos:

  1. Create a Photo Album

  2. Share with Friends and Family on Social Media

  3. Use for Save-the-Dates

  4. Put it on the frame!

Whether you picture a romantic picnic in the gardens or a leisurely stroll through vibrant blooms, your session will create cherished memories for years to come.

If you feel that we are the perfect fit, my promise to you as your photographer is to give you those genuine moments you will forever cherish - those moments that feel effortless.
